KALAMAZOO, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - A celebrity chef is touring the country to get kids excited about cooking.
Newschannel 3's Jessica Wheeler got to talk to chef and host Jet Tila at his stop in Kalamazoo.
Tila competed in the shows "Chopped" and "Iron Chef America" He is a regular celebrity judge on "Cut-Throat Kitchen"
Now he's using his passion to help the next generation.
Chef Jet has partnered with food service company, Chartwells, to bring what he calls his modern Asian kitchen into school cafeterias.
This week he visited Kalamazoo's Linden Grove Middle School to serve up some of his famous dishes, give a cooking presentation and answer the students’ questions about food.
His says his goal is to get kids wanting to cook early and cook healthy
"It's about really reinforcing and inspiring kids to cook. To really think about their relationship with food and meals because hopefully that encourages them to cook with their families and we're building a life skill that will serve them forever,” said chef Jet Tila.
Chef Jet says parents can play a huge role too, by letting their kids help out at meal time.
He says by getting them involved early they'll be inspired to try new foods and learn a valuable life skill.
