Growing Future Leaders with the Hourly Hi-Po Program

The Hourly Hi-Po Program is unlocking growth opportunities for frontline associates, transforming everyday excellence into long-term leadership
At Chartwells K12, we believe the future of food service leadership is already here and working hard in our schools every day. That’s why we launched the Hourly Hi-Po Program, a unique initiative designed to empower and elevate high-performing hourly associates.
We’ve now proudly celebrated the graduation of three cohorts, with dozens of dedicated team members completing the program. Even more exciting, several graduates have already stepped into new roles, demonstrating the impact of investing in talent from within.
The Hourly Hi-Po Program was created by our Chartwells K12 People & Culture Council with one clear purpose: to provide growth opportunities for team members who show exceptional promise and dedication. Over a 10-week immersive course, participants dive into the foundational pillars of food service management through sessions led by leaders and subject matter experts.
The program focuses on the five key areas of culinary excellence, human resources, marketing, nutrition, and safety. Beyond technical knowledge, the experience is designed to broaden participants’ understanding of the industry, expose them to career pathways, and build confidence in their ability to lead.
One of the most powerful outcomes of the Hourly Hi-Po Program is how it aligns personal growth with organizational strength. As participants gain skills and insights, they also contribute to a more diverse, prepared, and dynamic Chartwells K12 team.
Supervisors play a vital role in this journey, offering support, feedback, and mentorship as participants explore new concepts and work on their final projects. Together, they build a roadmap for career progression that benefits the individual, the team, and our partner school districts.
Since graduating from the program, Michael McGrade has advanced in his career and now serves as a chef manager at Norwich Public Schools in Connecticut
“The HiPo Program helped further my growth within the company,” McGrade said. “Given the opportunity, I am committed to exceeding expectations in fulfilling the needs of students, staff, and our client. Working towards this goal not only aligns with my aspirations but also contributes to my dream of establishing a long career with Chartwells.”
McGrade quickly made an impact immediately after completing the program, launching creative initiatives like a spice and veggie station for pizza day that was a hit with students. He’s also investing in continuing his education, a testament to his dedication and vision for the future.
As we prepare to welcome a new cohort this fall, we remain committed to recognizing and cultivating the exceptional talent within our ranks. The Hourly Hi-Po Program is more than a course; it’s a commitment to developing leaders who reflect the values and vision of Chartwells K12.
