Learning Takes Root at Orchard View Schools

The collaborative Hoop House project brings fresh flavors and hands-on education together

Last fall, Orchard View Schools in Michigan celebrated its first harvest from the new Hoop House project, an exciting milestone made possible through a strong partnership between the district’s agricultural department and the local Chartwells K12 team.

Director of Dining Services Kayleigh Higgins played a key role in launching the initiative by authoring the highly competitive Healthy Meals Incentives (HMI) Grant, securing $142,665 in funding from Action for Healthy Kids on behalf of USDA Food and Nutrition Service, in partnership with RMC Health and the Chef Ann Foundation. The grant supported efforts from August 2023 through September 2025 to enhance the nutritional quality of school meals and bring the Hoop House vision to life.

Through the Creating Healthy Schools Project in partnership with Muskegon Intermediate School District, Food Literacy Educator Lindsay Page joined the district to lead nutrition lessons, support gardens and tastings, and help guide early Hoop House development. Kayleigh also partnered with local grower Samantha Otto, whose expertise strengthened crop planning and harvest success.

After months of collaboration, lettuce and radishes were harvested and served in school cafeterias, allowing students to enjoy food they helped grow. The remaining produce was shared with the community to celebrate the achievement.

To build excitement, students, staff, and families voted to name the Hoop House Cardinal Crops: Where lOVe Grows, a reflection of Orchard View pride and community spirit.

With strong support and student enthusiasm, the district looks forward to expanding hands-on learning and deepening the connection between agriculture and school nutrition for years to come.
