Through chef-led innovation and memorable dining experiences, the Chartwells team increased meal participation and made the cafeteria a place students love

The Chartwells K12 team at Rochester Community Schools in Michigan proves that great school meals are about more than what’s on the menu; they’re about creating experiences students can’t wait to be part of. By combining culinary creativity, interactive programming, and meaningful student engagement, the team elevated the dining experience, increased participation, strengthened community connections, and supported the district’s long-term goals.

Creating More than a Meal

While free meals removed financial barriers, school leaders wanted to ensure students chose to eat in the cafeteria because they genuinely enjoyed the experience. The district also sought to strengthen the financial sustainability of its nutrition program while creating a welcoming environment centered around great food, discovery, and connection.

Bringing Excitement to the Cafeteria

To bring this vision to life, the Chartwells team introduced innovative culinary programs and memorable events that made school dining more interactive and engaging. The management team welcomed two chefs whose creativity and hands-on approach quickly made them favorites among students, bringing menus to life while building meaningful relationships throughout the school community.

Throughout the year, students enjoyed Discovery Kitchen events across all grade levels, Student Choice activities that gave high schoolers a voice in menu decisions, elementary school farmers markets, Global Eats celebrations featuring celebrity chefs, Fun Day luaus, pop-up omelet stations, and a Discovery Kitchen Cookoff for middle school students.

Beyond the cafeteria, the team hosted “Lunch for Dinner” events for the Board of Education and catered community functions, showcasing the creativity and quality of the district’s dining program. To further strengthen the program, Chartwells invested in its culinary team by hosting a midwinter masterclass that equipped kitchen leads with new skills and inspiration to continue delivering exceptional dining experiences.

Results that Speak for Themselves

The team’s investment in student-centered dining delivered measurable results. Lunch participation increased 6% year over year, while breakfast participation grew by an impressive 22%. Nearly 80 interactive student programs helped build excitement around school meals and deepened connections with students throughout the year. The district also successfully addressed concerns around utilizing its excess fund balance, demonstrating the long-term value of investing in innovative school nutrition. Perhaps most rewarding, the team’s chefs became local celebrities among elementary students, earning enthusiastic fans through their culinary creativity and genuine relationships.

A Recipe for Lasting Success

Success wasn’t measured solely by participation numbers. It was built on creating a dining experience students genuinely look forward to each day. By combining culinary expertise, innovative programming, and authentic student engagement, the Chartwells team showed how school meals can create excitement, foster connection, and make the cafeteria the happiest place in school.
