Meeting Students Where They Are: How One School Increased Breakfast Participation by 62%

When the Chartwells dining team recognized an access challenge, they found a creative solution that transformed breakfast participation

At Indian Valley Middle School in Pennsylvania’s Souderton Area School District, the Chartwells K12 team recognized a simple challenge with a big impact: not every student had the same access to breakfast.

While the cafeteria was conveniently located near the bus entrance, students arriving by car entered the building on the opposite side of the school, making it less convenient to stop for breakfast before class. The team saw an opportunity to remove that barrier and make it easier for more students to start the day with a nutritious meal.

Rather than asking students to change their routine, the team brought breakfast to them. A grab-and-go breakfast cart was placed in a high-traffic hallway near the family drop-off entrance, giving students quick access to fresh breakfast options as they entered the building. Supported by eye-catching Fuel Up signage and a week of morning announcements, the new service quickly caught students’ attention and built excitement. The menu featured convenient favorites like parfaits and smoothies, allowing students to grab breakfast and get to class on time.

The results were immediate. Breakfast participation increased by 62%, with average daily breakfasts rising from 59 to 95 students. On its busiest day, the breakfast cart served 116 students, demonstrating how improving convenience can dramatically increase participation. Most importantly, more students began each school day nourished and ready to learn.

Increasing meal participation isn’t always about making major changes. Sometimes, the greatest impact comes from listening to students, understanding their daily routines, and finding creative ways to meet them where they are.
