Transforming School Dining Through Partnership at Norwich Public Schools

A strategic partnership helps Norwich Public Schools elevate school meals, engage students, and deliver measurable results

When Norwich Public Schools in Connecticut wanted to elevate its foodservice program, district leaders looked for a partner who could bring fresh ideas, culinary expertise, and meaningful engagement opportunities to students and families.

In July 2023, Norwich transitioned from a self-operated program to a partnership with Chartwells K12. Together, the teams worked to enhance menu quality, strengthen culinary skills, and create more engaging school dining experiences.

Building Culinary Expertise

Chartwells helped support a smooth transition by bringing in training, resources, and operational expertise. A regional executive chef led Culinary Masterclass training focused on scratch, speed-scratch, and batch cooking, helping the Norwich team prepare fresh, innovative meals using wholesome, local ingredients.

Expanding Menus and Student Choice

The partnership also introduced globally inspired and on-trend dishes while incorporating student feedback to keep popular favorites on the menu. More appealing presentations and a wider variety of choices helped make school meals more enjoyable and encouraged students to explore new foods.

Through programs such as Global Eats, Mood Boost, and Student Choice, students had opportunities to discover new flavors, learn about nutrition, and help influence the menus they enjoyed at school. The Discovery Kitchen Cookoff also helped students build confidence and life skills through hands-on culinary experiences.

Throughout the school year, Chartwells and Norwich Public Schools delivered more than 15 engaging events for students of all ages.

Delivering Measurable Results

Within one school year, Norwich Public Schools saw an 18.3% increase in lunch participation, a 4.9% increase in breakfast participation, a 12% increase in catering sales, and a 15.3% increase in client revenue. These results reflect what is possible when a district and its foodservice partner work together toward a shared goal: creating nutritious, enjoyable, and engaging experiences for every student.
