Students Step Up as Waste Warriors

Celebrating 10 years of Stop Food Waste Day with hands-on learning, creative cooking, and real change in our cafeterias

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Stop Food Waste Day on April 29, our cafeterias across the country are empowering students to become Waste Warriors by learning how small actions can make a big impact on the planet.

Through our Discovery Kitchen Waste Warrior theme, students are diving into hands-on experiences that bring food waste awareness to life. With interactive culinary demos, taste tests, and engaging activities, our local food service teams are showing students that reducing food waste isn’t just important; it’s delicious, creative, and fun!

Food waste is a big challenge: nearly 40% of our food supply goes uneaten, and each of us throws away hundreds of pounds of food every year. But in our schools, students are learning simple, practical ways to change that both in the cafeteria and at home.

From Lessons to Lunch Trays

For elementary students at Washougal School District in Washington, Waste Warrior lessons came to life through a simple but powerful ingredient: bananas. Students explored bananas at all three stages of ripeness, from green to yellow to brown, learning how each stage can be used instead of tossed. The highlight for students was sampling freshly made banana chocolate chip muffins, showing how overripe fruit can be transformed into something students love.

Alongside the tasting, students received recipes and tips to try at home, reinforcing a key Waste Warrior message: “Don’t throw it away, use it in a new way.”

Turning Leftovers into Student Favorites

At KIPP Newark in New Jersey, students are seeing food waste reduction in action on their lunch trays. Before spring break, culinary teams took leftover vegetables and turned them into house-made pickled creations that are now featured on the high school serving line.

From made-to-order sandwiches to the grill station, these repurposed ingredients are a hit, with spicy cucumbers quickly becoming a student favorite. It’s a perfect example of how creativity in the kitchen can reduce waste while introducing bold, new flavors students genuinely enjoy.

Celebrating 10 Years of Impact

In 2017, Compass Group USA organized Stop Food Waste Day, which has grown into a worldwide effort to educate, inspire, and ignite change by bringing people together across communities to take action on one of the most pressing environmental challenges. Through hands-on learning and everyday choices in our schools, students are joining millions worldwide who have pledged to reduce food waste, sharing ideas and building habits that make a real difference. See how Compass Group is continuing to make a measurable impact in the fight against food waste, and learn about their next-generation technology partnership.
