New research reveals what Gen Alpha and Gen Z crave, and how Chartwells is turning insights into action

The future of K-12 dining is being shaped by two dynamic generations, Generation Alpha and Generation Z. Together, these students bring new expectations for what school meals should deliver: great flavor, balanced nutrition, global variety, and a connection to the world around them. Under our new, comprehensive insights platform, Chartwells AI: Appetite Intelligence, Chartwells partnered with the market intelligence and analytics experts at E15 to commission the K-12 Generational Research Report. Combining internal insights and the latest market research, the report offers a detailed view of what both generations expect from their dining experiences.

Gen Alpha (born 2010–2024) are true digital natives. They’ve grown up in a world of smart technology, streaming, and instant access to new ideas, and they bring that same curiosity to food. They enjoy exploring global flavors, value balance and variety, and are often raised by millennial parents who emphasize health and sustainability. Gen Z (born 1995–2009) paved the way for them. As the first generation to grow up connected and socially conscious, they look for authenticity, inclusion, and purpose in every experience, including what’s on their plates.

A Taste of What Students Love

Highlighting the foods students love most, it’s clear that comfort and customization remain at the heart of their choices. Potatoes top the list as the ultimate side dish, whether served as crinkle-cut fries, mashed, or baked. Eggs continue to be a protein-packed breakfast essential, fueling mornings through sandwiches, burritos, and scrambles that blend taste with nutrition. Chicken and tacos stand out as flavorful, customizable favorites that offer variety and flexibility across school menus. And when it comes to snacks, cheddar-flavored classics like Goldfish, Cheez-It, and Doritos remain timeless go-tos, proving that familiar flavors still hold strong appeal among both Gen Alpha and Gen Z students.

Beyond these favorites, the data reveal the motivations driving students’ food choices. Health and energy play a major role, with students and parents alike prioritizing meals that support focus and learning through protein-rich breakfasts and nutrient-dense sides. There’s also a strong sense of global curiosity, as younger generations increasingly seek opportunities to explore new and international flavors that connect them to cultures beyond their own. Finally, sustainability continues to guide decision-making, with both generations expressing a desire for food that supports the planet, favoring local sourcing, natural ingredients, and plant-forward options that align with their environmental values.

How Chartwells is Bringing Research to Life

Generational insights serve as a compass in reaching students with the foods they love. We’re committed to creating menus and dining experiences that meet students where they are, connecting every meal to what matters most to them.

Culinary innovation begins with a blend of comfort and creativity. Our chefs craft scratch-made meals that are both familiar and exciting, from tacos and global chicken dishes to loaded potato sides and nutrient-rich breakfasts, reflecting the flavors students crave while introducing them to new tastes, combinations, and cultures. Through our Global Eats program, we celebrate cuisines from around the world with approachable dishes like street tacos and Asian-inspired bowls. Our breakfast offerings, featuring egg sandwiches, burritos, and scrambles, provide high-protein, energizing options that help students start their day strong. Chartwells Farmers Markets bring the farm to schools, giving kids the opportunity to explore locally grown fruits and vegetables while meeting the people who grow their food.

Every Chartwells meal also reflects our commitment to smart nutrition, ensuring that taste and purpose go hand in hand. Menus emphasize whole grains, lean proteins, and plant-forward options that meet evolving nutrition standards. With an estimated 60-70% of Gen Alpha students eating plant-based meals each week, our chefs are leading the way with creative recipes like veggie scrambles and bean tacos that bring nutrition and flavor together seamlessly.

For today’s students, especially Gen Z, sustainability is an expectation. Food is a statement of values, and our sustainability initiatives are designed to align with those beliefs. Across our districts, we prioritize local sourcing and seasonal produce to support communities, reduce waste through smarter production practices, and expand plant-based offerings to create more sustainable dining environments.

Through these efforts, Chartwells is not only meeting student preferences but actively shaping the future of school dining.

Evolving With Every Generation

The tastes and expectations of students will continue to evolve, but so will we. Whether it’s the craveable crunch of fries, the comfort of a warm breakfast burrito, or the excitement of discovering a new global flavor, Chartwells is dedicated to serving what students love today while preparing them for the future of food.
